# Getting Started

The Navigator API V2 is open and read-only — no API key or account is required (see [Authentication](/navigator-api-docs/conventions/authentication.md)). You can make your first request right now.

## Make your first request

Retrieve all active regions and their attributes:

```bash
curl "https://map.navigatormap.org/api/search/?type=regions&export_bounds=false"
```

This returns a JSON array of region objects. Each field is described in [Region keys](/navigator-api-docs/field-reference/region-keys.md).

## Look up a single site

If you know a site's ProtectedSeas ID (`ps_id`), you can fetch it directly:

```bash
curl "https://map.navigatormap.org/api/search/?type=sites&ps_id=AIMEX101&lang=en_EN&export_bounds=true"
```

## Next steps

* Browse the full [Search](/navigator-api-docs/api-reference/search.md) endpoint for text, filter, and spatial queries.
* Get complete attributes for one site with [Site Details](/navigator-api-docs/api-reference/site-details.md).
* Keep a local copy of the data current with [data synchronization](/navigator-api-docs/conventions/data-synchronization.md).
* Pace your requests to stay within the [rate limit](/navigator-api-docs/conventions/rate-limiting.md) (5 requests per 10 seconds).
